Maid in India

(Our mornings start with tea served by her, and day seems to be easy with her presence. Though we do not acknowledge her much, her goodbye has made us say “somehow in our busy lives, we are missing you so much and it is always good to see you again and again and again”).

Through this article, I want to convey our dependence on technology and simultaneously increasing inability of nuclear family members to do daily household chores due to presence of maid. And the disturbance caused in our lives on her exit.

The famous “King Midas and his gold touch” and the present generation and touch technologies have few things in common i.e. excessive reliance on either at times seem to be very lucrative but total dependence on them sometimes take a toll on our lives.

Today’s human is running after computers from checking official mails to ordering groceries. And in this wi- fi era, many of us have forgotten the importance of manual labor. My above thoughts changed into belief when my maid ran away from my home to her native without giving us any prior notice.

The life suddenly came to a halt. It was like as if somebody has intentionally pressed pause in an enjoyable family movie in order to cause interruption. Be it house cleaning, cooking, party arrangement or any other petty household work every body in my house had one name on the mouth “Asha”. I think even Asha, our maid too needed her own tranquil rest. However, it was her exit that paved way for an unending commotion in our house. My peaceful abode in a week’s time turned into a house of distress.

With the advent of nuclear family theory in metro cities, no one has time for each other. Couples have their own shift jobs and kids are throughout busy with school, coaching and extra curricular activities. To be true all these beads (family members) are connected with a thread called maid.

And today my house lacked this thread. All the beads were scattered and four of us tried to find a solution of this problem. Career, job tension and recession seemed like ants in front of this mountain like problem. Numerous calls were made to friends and relatives. Finding a new maid was the top agenda; from office meetings, mail threads to our daily prayers, the words “Wanted Maid” highlighted everywhere.

The family members who hardly had time to see each other, sat together to discuss how the work needs to be done till we find a new help. Time sheet was prepared for everybody’s contribution. Menu for the entire month was kept simple and relied more on packed food. And in between, all these we sometimes cursed Asha and sometimes appreciated her for her time management and efficiency.

But in between all this, we realized how the modern day human has entangled him in Science and technology so much that he has forgotten how to live for his own. Is it our journey towards tech independence or personal dependence?

A blog with a simple message "Touch-screens can never replace Human-touch". After reading this, I realized how ordinary people like "house-help" become so important in our life and that no gadget/software is till date capable of replacing humans.

I found this close to much close to reality - a touching one. Needless to say, you write well :-)
